The University is requesting $236.30 million in this year’s capital request to the Minnesota Legislature for six priority projects that will renovate facilities and provide students access to 21st-century learning tools. These projects all have statewide impact and will help drive Minnesota's economy for years to come.
Here is a snapshot of the six projects in the Capital Request:
Higher Education Asset Preservation and Replacement (HEAPR) — HEAPR funding is used to maximize the effectiveness and extend the life of the University of Minnesota's 29 million square feet of infrastructure. It ultimately advances research and learning for our students.
Chemistry and Advanced Materials Science Building — Funding for this project will construct a 58,000-square-foot science and engineering building on the Duluth campus, creating instrument-rich learning and research opportunities and increasing the number of STEM graduates sought by local industries and employers.
Health Sciences Education Facility — Funds will create a new education and training facility for the Academic Health Center to support interdisciplinary, team-based learning and care. It will advance integrated health care in Minnesota.
Plant Growth Research Facility — Funding for this project will create an energy-efficient facility, increase hands-on learning for students and the public, and facilitate research that attracts millions in funding.
Academic and Student Experience Investments — Funding will convert obsolete spaces on the Crookston, Duluth, Morris, and Twin Cities campuses into modern spaces to meet the needs of today's programming and provide new learning opportunities across Minnesota.
Pillsbury Hall Renovation — Funding will renovate obsolete science facilities in this iconic building with modern teaching, learning, and research spaces to serve over 6,000 students studying humanities programs.
In addition, the U is advancing a FY17 Supplemental Budget Request, which seeks just under $39 million in recurring and one-time funding from the state for four key investments: Cyber Security, Health Training Restoration, Mining Innovation Minnesota, and a Healthy Minnesota.
