Thanks to a commitment of $1.225 million, faculty research and teaching, graduate student needs and curricular development will be better supported at the University of Minnesota's Department of Philosophy. The gift, given by PrairieCare president Dr. Stephen R. Setterberg, is the largest donation in the department's history.
"Dr. Setterberg's gift is absolutely transformative," said philosophy department chair Valerie Tiberius. "It will allow us to support the research of the amazing philosophers in our community and to recruit new world class faculty to join us. It is particularly meaningful to me that this gift comes from a person who truly appreciates the contribution that philosophy has made to his own significant contributions to society in the field of mental health."
Setterberg says that he "hopes that this gift will highlight the University of Minnesota's commitment to philosophical inquiry as the bedrock of humanistic understanding," as well as build an intellectual, scientific and creative environment that will have a significant positive impact on generations of students at the U of M.
Setterberg is an alumnus of philosophy (BA '80) and the University of Minnesota Medical School (MD '84). As a leader in fostering the development of innovative systems of psychiatric healthcare, Dr. Setterberg credits his liberal arts education and, in particular, the critical, reflective and analytic skills he developed while majoring in philosophy with expanding the imaginative horizons of his personal and professional life.
The donation will be completed in installments over the next five years.
