The University of Minnesota Twin Cities is one of the “Top 25 LGBTQ-Friendly Colleges & Universities” in the nation, according to findings announced recently by Campus Pride.

The Campus Pride Index, which yielded the rankings, is based in research on policy, program, and practice and is conducted for and by LGBTQ experts in higher education. Each campus updates its index annually and uses the Campus Pride benchmarking tool to make improvements for LGBTQ life on campus.

“There is a lot to be learned” from the top 25 campuses like the University of Minnesota, notes Shane Windmeyer, executive director of Campus Pride and creator of the index. Many of the top 25 colleges are addressing recruitment and retention needs of LGBTQ students, as well as concerns for transgender student safety.

The U’s Twin Cities campus scored 4.5 out of 5, based on factors like institutional support, housing and residence life, academic life, campus safety, counseling, and recruitment and retention efforts.
