Board of Regents interviews presidential finalist, sets special meeting for Dec. 18

Today, the University of Minnesota Board of Regents interviewed Joan Gabel, finalist for president of the University during its regular December meeting. On Tuesday, December 18 at 10 a.m., the Board will hold a special meeting to discuss and take action on selection of the 17th President of the University of Minnesota; terms of employment for the incoming president; and a framework for the transition.

Gabel responded to questions about a broad variety of topics, including the University's land-grant mission, academic medicine, intercollegiate athletics, revenue sources, shared governance, her leadership approach, enrollment challenges, research, the achievement gap, and her vision for the University.

“Above everything, I am grateful to the University community for their engagement in this important process,” said Board of Regents Chair David McMillan. “While the Board is the hiring authority for the University’s president, the thoughtful input we have heard from key stakeholders across the system has been invaluable to the process."

Nonresident/non-reciprocity undergraduate tuition on the Twin Cities campus

The Board approved the President’s recommended undergraduate nonresident/non-reciprocity tuition increase of 10 percent on the Twin Cities campus, which will take effect for the 2019–2020 academic year. The Board affirmed the President’s recommendation to hold the tuition rate of currently enrolled nonresident/non-reciprocity students to an increase of no more than 5.5 percent.

In conjunction with this increase, the University will recommend additional investments to enhance recruitment and retention of nonresident students in its proposed FY20 operating budget, which is to be reviewed by the Board in June 2019. The recommendation will include increased funding for students with financial need and exceptional merit.

The Board also:

  • Reviewed proposed amendments to the Regents’ Traffic Regulation Ordinances. The proposed amendments resulted from a comprehensive review to address new modes of transportation such as electric scooters, changes in traffic patterns and the changing needs of the University community. The Board will hold a public hearing at 7:45 a.m. on Thursday, February 7 to allow public comment on the proposed amendments. The meeting will be held in the Board Room on the 6th floor of the McNamara Alumni Center on the Twin Cities campus.
  • Approved a one-year contract extension for P.J. Fleck, head coach for Gopher football, extending his contract through the 2024 season.

The next regularly scheduled Board meeting will be held February 7–8, 2018. Visit the Board of Regents website for more information.
