15 tips to get you walking more

April 6, 2016

Today is the American Heart Association’s National Walking Day, an initiative designed to help us all become more active.

Health Talk’s office is lucky enough to have Janelle Nivens not only as an accomplished web editor but walking extraordinaire. Janelle recently achieved her goal of walking 10,000 steps everyday in 2015. In an effort to inspire others to get active, Janelle compiled 15 tips to help you walk more. So, lace up your sneakers, start your playlists and get walking!

  1. Keep walking shoes at work
  2. Identify a daily walking destination by your home, school, or work and commit to going there every day
  3. Go on a walk date instead
  4. Go on a photo walk
  5. Take public transportation – walking to the bus stop or train station will add up
  6. Walk to a bathroom further away from your office
  7. Find a walk buddy and meet for weekly walks
  8. Take a walk tour led by preservation or historical societies
  9. Create a walking star chart and give yourself a sticker every day you meet your walking goal
  10. Walking meetings at work
  11. Listen to your favorite podcasts while walking
  12. Create a playlist that is the length of time you want to walk
  13. Establish a 1, 3, and 5 mile walk route by your house
  14. After dinner walk with your friends or family (a great tradition)
  15. Go on a sunrise or sunset walk, take a photo and share on social media

“We have a problem with inactivity in the U.S. and setting goals like 10,000 steps a day is great,” said William Roberts, M.D., professor in the Medical School’s Department of Family Medicine and Community Health. “This is a smart tip sheet for those who are already on the walking path and shooting for a higher goal. For those who are contemplating starting, give yourself five minutes to start up and add a minute every day or two until you are in the 30-60 minute range. This may allow you to activate and 10,000 steps will not seem so far.”
