Board of Regents celebrates student, faculty and staff successes
The University of Minnesota Board of Regents began its May meeting with annual recognitions of some of the outstanding honors earned by University faculty and students in the previous year.
The Regents recognized distinguished professors, newly awarded fellows, service award winners, national scholarship recipients and NCAA champions. In total, more than 70 individuals from the University community were celebrated in the meeting’s opening hour.
“The University of Minnesota has a global reputation for excellence and a reputation built by our faculty, staff and students across our system,” said Board of Regents Chair David McMillan. “We appreciate all that they do to advance the University’s mission here in Minnesota and around the globe. Their talent, hard work and commitment make the University of Minnesota a world-class educational and research institution.”

Regents endorse enrollment plans for four University campuses
The Board voted to endorse enrollment plans for the University’s Crookston, Duluth, Morris and Rochester campuses. Chancellors of the four campuses outlined their unique enrollment strategies and goals during the Board’s March meeting. Though tailored to the individual needs of each campus, all four plans were developed according to principles previously outlined by the Board, which include attracting Minnesota’s best and brightest students to the University; a commitment to access, affordability, diversity and inclusion; and providing the highest quality student experiences possible.
At its March 2016 meeting, the Board endorsed the Twin Cities campus enrollment plan. Today’s action is the first time the Board has endorsed enrollment plans for these campuses.
The Board also:
- Reviewed and approved the Provost’s annual tenure and promotion recommendations for faculty members and heard presentations from four newly-tenured faculty members on their research, teaching and outreach at the University.
- Discussed a proposal to allow alcohol sales in general seating areas of 3M Arena at Mariucci and Williams Arena on the Twin Cities campus, bringing these facilities in line with nearby TCF Bank Stadium, which has sold beer and wine in general seating since 2012, and Amsoil Arena in Duluth, which began selling beer and wine last year.
- Approved proposed real estate transactions for the University to purchase property on Erie Street SE in Minneapolis, as well as a land swap on W St. Marie St. and Gold St. in Duluth.
- Reviewed the President’s Recommended Annual Capital Improvement Budget which proposes projects across the system totaling $376 million dollars for fiscal year 2020.
