Fall sports are back in action

The Gophers cheer team leads the charge before the football season opener on Aug. 30, 2018.

As freshmen on campus began feeling more at home, the Gopher football team celebrated its 10th season at home in TCF Bank Stadium with a convincing 48-10 win over New Mexico State.

Those freshmen, who filled up nearly the entire student section and reflected a golden sun at kickoff, had lots to cheer about starting in the second quarter. Trailing 10-7, the Gophers erupted for four touchdowns, including three in the final 3:21 of the half.

Antoine Winfield Jr.’s gritty 76-yard punt return for a touchdown, in which he bounced off of five Aggie defenders, was the pivotal play. Tyler Johnson’s two TD receptions (both from true freshman starting quarterback Zack Annexstad) and Seth Green’s two rushing touchdowns from the wildcat formation—all in the first half—provided more than enough scoring for Minnesota.

Other Gopher fall sports are deeper into their seasons, with the soccer team off to a 3-2 start and anticipating a home matchup Sunday against No. 1 Stanford. The No. 3 volleyball team is 2-0 and hosts the Diet Coke Classic at the Maturi Sports Pavilion this weekend.
