Former University of Minnesota President Nils Hasselmo passes away at age 87

Pillars
It is with sadness that the University learned that former President Hasselmo passed away Wednesday morning. Nils Hasselmo served as president of the University of Minnesota from 1988 through 1997. His tenure featured a significant commitment to undergraduate education with improvements in class sizes, graduation rates, and brand new initiatives (particularly in student services) to adopt and embrace the emerging trends in the new digital economy.

President Hasselmo relentlessly championed the value of the University to all Minnesotans. In an editorial written for publication on his last day as President on June 30, 1997, he noted that “We must all understand the unique nature of Minnesota's only research, land-grant University. It should not and cannot be exactly like any other institution.”

“The University of Minnesota has lost a dedicated member of our community. Nils was a remarkable higher education leader, and our University is better because of his service,” said President Eric Kaler.
