The University of Minnesota and Team USA took home a gold and silver medal at the International Cheer Union (ICU) World Championships at the Wide World of Sports Complex located at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando.

In the Pom division, the world champions took gold by defeating Japan and Mexico, who took home silver and bronze medals. Minnesota and Team USA took silver in the Jazz division. Japan won gold in Jazz, while Mexico took home the bronze.

The 2025 competition marked the third time Minnesota represented the U.S. National Team, as it did in 2010 and 2014. With the gold medal in 2025, it marks the fourth time the Gophers have won gold and the third time they’ve come home with a silver medal. Minnesota previously won gold in the Pom and silver in Jazz in 2014. In 2010, the Gophers took home gold medals in both Jazz and Freestyle Division (Pom) and silver in Hip Hop.

Prior to the ICU World Championships, the Gophers won the Pom national title for the third straight year at the Universal Dance Association Dance Nationals, also in Orlando. They also took second in Jazz for the second straight year after winning a national championship in 2023. Minnesota is the gold standard in dance competition and has earned 23 national championships—the most in the nation—since 2003.

The ICU was formed in 2004 and is the recognized world-governing body of Cheer (Cheerleading & Performance Cheer). The ICU comprises 120 member National Cheer Federations and 10 million athletes on all continents, hosts World Championships consistently welcoming over 70 nations, and continues to grow as a unified voice for all those who are dedicated to the positive advancement of cheerleading throughout the world.
