Tonight in his final State of the State address, Governor Mark Dayton expressed his full support for the University of Minnesota’s fiscal year 2019 supplemental budget request: $10 million to hold tuition flat on all five U of M campuses for Minnesota resident undergraduates—approximately 31,500 students.
President Kaler responded to the Governor’s announcement:
“By recommending full support for the University of Minnesota’s supplemental budget request, Governor Dayton has made a powerful statement about the University’s role in educating the leaders and professionals of tomorrow, as well as the need for state support to make education accessible to all Minnesotans. For that I am extremely grateful.
“The University has worked hard to keep tuition rates stable for Minnesota’s students. Over the past six years, our resident undergraduates have seen the smallest tuition percentage increases in the past 58 years: an average annual increase of 1% on the Twin Cities campus and 0.4% on all other campuses. And, 39% of U of M bachelor degree recipients systemwide graduate with zero student debt. We are proud of those statistics.
“This coming year, we want to hold tuition flat for Minnesotans, and we are requesting state support to help us do that. I join Governor Dayton in urging the passage of a supplemental budget bill that supports Minnesota’s future: our state’s students. They are more than worthy of that investment.”
