Greg Beilman elected interim CEO of University of Minnesota Physicians and appointed interim VP for University clinical operations

Dr. Greg Beilman, a long-serving leader within the University of Minnesota, has been elected by the University of Minnesota Physicians (M Physicians) Board of Directors as interim chief executive officer of M Physicians and appointed interim vice president for clinical operations for the University of Minnesota.
In this interim role, Beilman will report to the M Physicians board of directors and to University of Minnesota President Rebecca Cunningham effective July 1, 2025. His reporting relationship reflects the University’s strong commitment to sustain and grow its healthcare delivery and public service mission for Minnesota, the nation and world.
Trained as a critical care and trauma surgeon, Beilman is a widely respected clinician who has served in various leadership roles within M Physicians and the University of Minnesota Medical School over more than 30 years. Until 2014, He also served as a colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves, where he cared for injured members of the military deployed to Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
"Over his more than three decades of service to the University of Minnesota, Dr. Beilman has earned the trust of his colleagues, effectively leading high-stakes initiatives, including the University of Minnesota Medical Center's response to COVID-19," said President Cunningham. "Dr. Beilman builds strong relationships and integrates what he learned during his military service to inform his decision-making. I look forward to partnering with Dr. Beilman and Dean Tolar at this critical time for our healthcare enterprise."
Beilman will lead M Physicians and serve the University through a transformational period, as the University and its partners develop a more fully integrated academic health system to best meet the healthcare needs of all Minnesotans, and tighter alignment of the physician practice, Medical School and University.
“Dr. Beilman’s leadership and talents are rooted in service to others,” said Dr. Jakub Tolar, chair of the M Physicians Board of Directors, dean of the University of Minnesota Medical School and vice president for clinical affairs. “He is a remarkable leader and a kind and caring surgeon who takes extraordinary steps to help patients access the care they need.”
Beilman's military background equipped him with a deep sense of resourcefulness and adaptability, qualities that shaped his approach to medicine and leadership. As co-lead for the M Health Fairview COVID-19 Command Center and senior vice president for acute care at University of Minnesota Medical Center, Beilman guided the health system through the most challenging stages of the pandemic, ensuring patients received the care they needed while supporting those who provided it.
Since 2022, Beilman has served the Medical School as associate dean of Department of Defense research and partnerships, advancing the school’s research mission and expanding its national impact.
He has also driven service to Minnesota as the founding director of the University’s Translational Center for Resuscitative and Trauma Care, where he’s led the center’s development and evaluation of innovative acute trauma care practices in low resource, rural and emergency care settings.
