Haley Cureton, MPH, University of Minnesota School of Public Health ‘13, has been selected as a 2018 Dalai Lama Fellow from the United States. This secular and nonpolitical program, which merges altruism with effectiveness in the pursuit of large-scale social good, was personally authorized by the 14th Dalai Lama in 2010 and continues to expand its global reach and impact.
Cureton is one of 26 fellows selected worldwide this year and joins 151 from 40 countries since 2011. Fellows engage in a leadership curriculum to strengthen both mind and values. Each fellow designs and implements a Field Project addressing a global challenge. Cureton, from Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota, will challenge the Twin Cities to envision a culture of health, asking residents of both cities: “What does a culture of health look like to you?” Responses and portraits will be curated into an art show in spring 2019 aiming to envision a better future for all.
"Our world faces daunting challenges that can only be overcome if all of us, especially young people, make commitments to thinking and acting out of a genuine sense of global responsibility," said Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama.
Cureton currently leads communication for Interdisciplinary Research Leaders (IRL) housed at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). Prior to her time with IRL, she spent 15 months living at the Mount Madonna Center, an intentional community rooted in the teachings of classical yoga, Ayurveda and service located in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California.
“My intention is peace, peace within and peace without. As a Dalai Lama Fellow, I will continue to cultivate the tranquility, integrity, and compassion needed to foster that peace in myself and in the world,” said Cureton.
