Kelly Hansen has been appointed director of state relations with the University of Minnesota’s Office of Government and Community Relations. In her role, Hansen will advocate on behalf of the University at the Minnesota State Capitol, with a primary focus of representing the University’s health science schools and colleges. She will begin August 7.
“A U of M alumna and a lawyer by trade, Kelly has extensive legislative experience and relationships along with deep expertise in legislative policy and procedure,” said J.D. Burton, chief government relations officer. “I am confident that she will ably serve the health science schools and colleges as well as the entire University system as we promote the work of this great institution and deep impact it has throughout the state.”
“I am excited for this new opportunity to elevate the good work that the University of Minnesota does educating our future workforce, conducting ground-breaking research, and enhancing the quality of life for those who live in our state," said Hansen.
Since 2015, Hansen has served as the executive assistant to Minnesota House of Representatives Majority Leader Joyce Peppin, managing Representative Peppin’s office as well as the Committee on Rules and Legislative Administration and the Subcommittee on Workplace Harassment and Safety. Prior to that role, Hansen served as legislative assistant to House of Representatives Speaker Kurt Daudt from 2013–2015, drafting constituent correspondence, tracking bills and managing the schedule of Speaker Daudt.
Hansen began her career in the administration of Governor Tim Pawlenty. As citizen outreach team leader, she managed the day-to-day operations of the constituent services department staff and worked directly with constituents on a variety of issues, including health, human services, housing and higher education.
Hansen holds a juris doctorate degree from the University of St. Thomas School of Law and a bachelor of arts in political science from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities.
