What: Adam Levy, frontman for the Honeydogs, Mina Moore, Claire Monesterio of GRRRL PRTY and Johnny and Molly Solomon of Communist Daughter will speak and perform at Music and the Mind Unplugged, an evening of acoustic performances and unfiltered conversation on creativity and mental health—topics that are often difficult to discuss openly. Music and the Mind Unplugged will feature musical performances, quiet moments, laughter and truly candid conversations with the audience on the artists’ personal experiences with mental health.
Levy’s recent release, “Naubinway,” honors his son Daniel, who took his life in 2012 after a lengthy struggle with mental illness. The album is a deeply personal reflection on sorrow and loss, his son, and mental illness and the human condition. Levy speaks and performs around the country to reduce the stigma of mental illness.
Music and the Mind Unplugged is tailored to University of Minnesota students. Admission is free.
Background: Mental health is the number one public health issue on college campuses. In 2015, 33 percent of U of M students reported a mental health diagnosis in their lifetime, up from 25 percent in 2007, according to the 2015 College Student Health Survey of University of Minnesota Twin Cities students. The U of M offers a number of initiatives to support student mental health. Music and the Mind Unplugged taps into the arts to inspire confidence, nurture resilience and reduce stigma. Music and the Mind Unplugged is sponsored by Boynton Health, a unit of the Office of Student Affairs.
