On Thursday, Jan. 7, University of Minnesota President Joan Gabel shared the following statement regarding the insurrection that occurred at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

"I join you in horror and disbelief by yesterday’s lawlessness and violence at the U.S. Capitol. I join you in the shock at what we witnessed happening here in America. That abstraction quickly became a tragic reality as our national ideals were tested in an assault on our citadel of liberty. The effort to undermine these ideals failed, but we must remain steadfast in ensuring the light of our democracy remains strong and that our shared pursuit towards a more perfect union endures.

"On this day and in the days ahead, let us recommit to care for and look out for one another. Let us recommit to our common purpose to educate and serve. And let us recommit to our shared destiny as a government of the people, by the people, and for the people."
