The University of Minnesota Board of Regents has elected Regent David J. McMillan to serve a two-year term as Board chair, beginning July 1. Regent Kendall J. Powell was named vice chair. Both were unanimously elected to their new leadership positions during the Board of Regents meeting Friday morning.
“With the support of my colleagues, I look forward to continuing the work of aligning the University’s research and education missions with the needs of Minnesotans, and prioritizing higher education affordability for Minnesota residents,” said McMillan. “We will continue to focus on student-centered outcomes as we govern.”
McMillan, vice chair from 2015-17, will replace outgoing chair Dean E. Johnson, who served a two-year term as chair and will continue as a regent on the board.
McMillan was re-elected to the Board of Regents this year for a second six-year term, representing Congressional District 8. He is executive vice president at Minnesota Power. McMillan received his bachelor’s degree in economics and history from the University of Minnesota Duluth and a law degree from the University of Minnesota. He previously served as the board chair of the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, the Natural Resources Research Institute, the Area Partnership for Economic Expansion, and Goodwill Industrial Vocational Enterprises. McMillan lives in Duluth.
Powell was elected to the Board this year as an at-large member. He is chairman and former chief executive officer of General Mills. He serves on the board of directors for Medtronic, the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, Greater MSP, the Grocery Manufacturers Association, and the Minnesota Business Partnership. Powell, who lives in Golden Valley, received a bachelor of arts degree in biology from Harvard University and a MBA from Stanford University.
