"I, and our entire University of Minnesota family, join in remembering the amazing life and legacy of our alumnus Vice President Walter Mondale. On behalf of a grateful University, we stand in appreciation of his exemplary life of dedication and service to Minnesota and the world, as Vice President, U.S. Senator, presidential candidate, U.S. ambassador to Japan and as Minnesota’s Attorney General. We also recognize with great appreciation the countless and inspiring ways he gave back to his alma mater to make us all better—as a teacher and leader; as a namesake and benefactor to our law school and Humphrey School fellowship program; and as a friend and mentor to students and colleagues alike. I recall Hubert Humphrey once observed that the most evident characteristic about Walter Mondale “is that he's non-abrasive. He is not a polarizer." Let us lean into our proud alumnus’ powerful legacy of conscience, conviction and service to guide us, to heal us and to help us move forward as a community in the days and weeks ahead."
