What: A student-led rally to advocate for the University’s legislative priorities
Who: Students from all five U of M campuses, President Kaler, Board of Regents Chair Dean Johnson
When: Tuesday, March 29; campus rally from noon to 1 p.m.; students meet in small groups with lawmakers from 1:45 to 3:45 p.m.
Where: On-campus rally, Johnson Room at McNamara Alumni Center, 200 SE Oak St, Minneapolis, and the Minnesota Capitol Complex. Students will use the open space on the first floor of the Minnesota Senate Building as their home base.

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL (3/28/2016)—On Tuesday, March 29, more than 150 University of Minnesota students from all five campuses will rally on Support the U Day to advocate for the University’s 2016 legislative requests. The event, organized by the Minnesota Student Legislative Coalition, gives students the opportunity to meet with legislators and share their experiences at the U of M.
President Eric Kaler, Board of Regents Chair Dean Johnson and student leaders from U of M Twin Cities, U of M Duluth, U of M Crookston, U of M Morris and U of M Rochester will kick off the rally at noon in the Johnson Room at the McNamara Alumni Center on the U's Minneapolis campus. Students are scheduled to begin boarding buses for St. Paul at 1 p.m. and will meet with their legislators from 1:45 to 3:45 p.m.
Once at the Minnesota Capitol complex, the students will use the open space on the first floor of the Minnesota Senate Building as their home base, where they expect visits legislative leaders. That location will also have a social media station where students can use their social channels to thank lawmakers and share photos from the event.
The University is requesting $236.3 million in this year’s bonding bill for six priority projects that will enhance student experience throughout Minnesota by renovating facilities and providing students access to 21st century learning tools:
- Higher Education Asset Preservation and Replacement (HEAPR) systemwide ($100M)
- Chemistry and Advanced Materials Science Building on the Duluth campus ($27.2M)
- Health Sciences Education Facility for the University’s Academic Health Center on the Twin Cities campus ($66.7M)
- Plant Growth Research Facility on the Twin Cities campus ($4.4M)
- Academic and Student Experience Investments systemwide ($16M)
- Pillsbury Hall Renovation on the Twin Cities campus ($22M)
