Goldy Gopher at the Minnesota State Fair

From offbeat science performances to games for the sake of research, the U has something to offer visitors of all ages at the Minnesota State Fair. Here are a few highlights. Download the new UMN@TheFair app to see the entire schedule of activities and events.

1. Giveaways!
Did somebody say “free”? We’re talking backpacks, water bottles, Goldy Gopher glasses, and more. Visit all the University of Minnesota locations around the fair and see what freebies we have to offer! Details

2. Ham it up with Goldy
Have your photo taken with everyone’s favorite mascot—Goldy Gopher—at the U of M Central building. Then post your picture with our #UMNonaStick hashtag. Details

3. A ‘Force’ of nature
Take a few crazy scientists, mix in basic physics, top it off with slapstick comedy, and you have an incredibly entertaining science show by the Physics Force on Aug. 31 and Sept. 2. Details  

4. Operation: Fun
See actual medical devices developed at the University of Minnesota and place them in their proper location in this life-sized “Operation” game on Sept. 3. Details

5. Where did that come from?
The National Center for Food Protection and Defense will be hosting a game show on Sept. 3 to show you how far some of your favorite fair food ingredients have traveled. Details

6. A game buffet
What games grab your child’s attention? On Sept. 4, parents and their children ages 2-4 are invited to play games and share their thoughts about them. Details

7. A beard that’s all the buzz
The U’s bee exhibit at the Agriculture Horticulture Building runs every day of the fair, but on Sept. 2 see a live bee beard! Hipsters are sure to be jealous. Details

8. Gopher Dairy Bar
Visit the student-run Gopher Dairy Bar, located in the Cattle Barn, for a cool shake or a glass of milk. Proceeds help to fund student activities. Details

9. An Eco Experience
In the EcoExperience Building you can learn about energy-efficient initiatives, the creation of chemicals and materials from renewable resources, and efforts to minimize waste and prevent pollution. Details

10. The Pride of Minnesota
Check out the world-class University of Minnesota Marching Band on Maroon & Gold Day (Sept. 6), as members step, strut, and play their way across the fairgrounds during the parade. Wear your Gopher gear! Details
