UMN Expert: Black Friday shopping and the hunt for deals

Black Friday marks the beginning of the shopping frenzy that lasts through the holiday season. But for the expected 164 million people shopping this weekend and Cyber Monday, consumers might not find all the deals they expect right off the bat.

George John, a professor of marketing with the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, says when and if an item goes on sale comes down to a set of numbers shoppers will never see.

“Many of the retailers are using data analytics to decide how much and when to put things on sale, much like the airline and hotel industries. This means the ‘traditional’ Black Friday emphasis will be spread over the holidays depending on what is selling and when.”
