University of Minnesota highlights impact, value of 641,000 alumni across Minnesota and beyond
641,000 living University of Minnesota alumni are a force for good across the state, nation and world, with 62% of alumni in Minnesota.
Alumni relations leaders from all five University of Minnesota campuses shared the tremendous impact alumni have on the University with the Board of Regents at their July meeting. Last year, the more than 366,000 alumni who live in Minnesota generated a $65.9 billion economic impact on the state, which is in addition to the University’s $11.5 billion impact. Beyond their contributions to their local communities, University of Minnesota alumni are also a powerful engine for a healthier Minnesota, making up 70% of the state’s healthcare workforce.
“There is strong alumni relations work occurring on each of the five campuses,” said Lisa Lewis, president and CEO of the University of Minnesota Alumni Association. “We are proud of these efforts and the impact of alumni and we see even greater potential ahead. With President Cunningham’s leadership and the support of the chancellors, we are developing strategies to further engage alumni across the University. Our shared vision is that all alumni champion the University of Minnesota, the value of a U of M education, and the distinct strengths of each campus.”
Alumni support the University in six ways as advocates, mentors and role models, influencers, loyal enthusiasts, volunteers and donors. These activities impact legislative and philanthropic support; student enrollment and success; community and belonging; and the University’s capacity and reputation. In fiscal year 2024, alumni gave more than $218 million to the University, representing 40% of all donors and 56% of all giving.
The presentation marked the first time University-wide alumni engagement work was included in the annual report to the Board of Regents. Looking ahead, efforts are underway to develop a collaborative framework that will deepen collective alumni engagement and impact across the University and beyond.
