Highlighting a year of impact and excellence, University of Minnesota President Rebecca Cunningham and Executive Vice President and Provost Gretchen Ritter previewed a refreshed University Performance and Accountability Report to the Board of Regents, outlining how the institution’s five campuses are progressing. The report specifically tracks long-term progress and metrics that are distinct from those highlighted in Elevate Extraordinary 2030, the University’s new strategic roadmap.

“The University of Minnesota is committed to meeting the needs of students and our state, while living up to our public service mission,” Cunningham said. “This commitment, as well as our charter, compels us to set meaningful metrics and regularly examine our progress in a way that is distinct, yet deeply intertwined with how we will measure statewide success.”

The annual Performance and Accountability Report provides an assessment of the University’s progress on key metrics and how the University stewards the public interest, resources and facilities. The report includes traditional metrics, such as graduation rate, first year retention rate, annual research expenditures and campus climate, as well as new proposed benchmarks, including faculty tenure, institutional impact, philanthropy and sustainability — ongoing priorities for the University for years to come.

“With the launch of Elevate Extraordinary 2030, which will have its own set of success metrics, we also have the opportunity to chart a new course and track other metrics that we may want to consider for the next five, 10 or even 20 years,” Ritter said. “We hope to measure the long-term impact the University has on the state, as well as the public’s perception of the value of its only land-grant research university.”

A final Performance and Accountability report will return to the Board for action in February.

The Board also:

  • Recognized outgoing Morris Chancellor Janet Ericksen; Dr. Shashank Priya, who is transitioning from his role as vice president for research and innovation to become the founding executive director of the National Security Research Institute; Julie Tonneson, outgoing vice president and budget director; and Professor Paul Glewwe, who earned the University’s highest faculty honor, Regents Professorship.
  • Received an update on Elevate Extraordinary 2030, including work underway to identify key early actions, and progress and success metrics.
  • Reviewed fiscal 2027 budget variables.
  • Received an update on University enrollment planning.
  • Reviewed the University’s strategies for student experiential and immersive learning and career preparation.
  • Received reports from the University Senate Consultative Committees.

The Board’s Virtual Forum accepts audio, video and written input, which is shared directly with Regents and included in the Board’s public materials. The public is encouraged to visit the Virtual Forum to submit their comments.
