U’s College of Continuing Education formally announces name change

The University of Minnesota’s college formerly known as the College of Continuing Education (CCE) has announced its name has been changed to the College of Continuing and Professional Studies (CCAPS), effective October 2.

The name changewhich was officially approved at the University’s Board of Regents meeting in September will more clearly reflect and resonate with the diverse audiences that the College serves.

“The words continuing education resonated with some, but not all of our learners,” said Dean Mary Nichols. “Over the years, the College has added a range of credit and noncredit programs for degree-seeking students, certificate seekers, and those coming to polish their professional knowledge through coursework and conferences. We want our new name to reflect this professionally-oriented audience.”

While the College’s mission will remain the same, CCAPS puts an emphasis on programs that are attuned to the ever-changing needs of the workforce in Minnesota and beyond. These programs include applied graduate and undergraduate degrees, professional development certificates, and conferences that translate University research into practical knowledge. Additionally, the College’s individualized degrees offer flexibility for students seeking to self-design programs that meet their unique goals.

“The new name better reflects our mission, which is to provide opportunities for people to enhance their academic credentials, to advance their careers through professional courses, and to continue to learn across their lifespan through enrichment activities,” said Nichols.

One demonstration of CCAPS’ ability to meet workforce and respond to market need is its recent offering of a 24-week Coding Boot Camp, an intensive training that’s designed to give working professionals the knowledge and skills they need to become professional web developers. The boot camp, currently full, begins on Nov. 7, with another session to begin in February.
