Volleyball team clinches Big Ten title

Three Gopher volleyball players celebrate a successful point.

The No. 3 University of Minnesota volleyball team clinched the Big Ten Conference title with a thrilling five-set victory at Ohio State on Nov. 17. The Golden Gophers (24-2, 18-0 in league action) won the match 23-25, 25-20, 25-13, 23-25, 15-11.

The 2018 championship marks the third Big Ten title for the Gophers in program history. Minnesota clinched the title outright on the last game of the season in 2015, and also won the conference crown in 2002.

With the win, the Gophers also advanced to the NCAA tournament. With no conference tournament in volleyball, the Big Ten regular season champion claims the league's automatic bid.

Minnesota has one week remaining in the regular season. The team travels to Penn State and Rutgers this coming weekend.
