Title No. 2 in a terrific season

Head coach John Anderson gets a Gatorade shower after the Gophers beat Purdue 6-4 in the championship game of the Big Ten Tournament.

The Gopher baseball team continued its impressive and historic run this spring, claiming its 10th Big Ten Tournament title by beating Purdue 6-4 in the championship game in Omaha on May 27.

With the conference tourney title, Minnesota received an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, although that invitation was already a foregone conclusion. The victory also assured that the Gophers would host an NCAA regional this coming weekend at Siebert Field, the first time that’s happened since 2000.

Minnesota received the No. 14 overall seed in the 2018 NCAA Baseball Tournament and will host the Minneapolis Regional beginning June 1. The Gophers will take on Canisius that evening at 7 p.m., and the other two teams in the four-team, double-elimination regional are UCLA and Gonzaga.

After Sunday’s victory over the Boilermakers, the Gophers improved to 41-13 on the season and have won 27 of their last 30 games. The 10th Big Ten Tournament title is tops among conference teams, as are Minnesota’s 32 appearances in the NCAA tourney. The Gophers are hoping to advance to the College World Series in Omaha for the first time since 1977.
