The University of Minnesota Board of Regents has scheduled a special meeting for 3 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2018 to discuss three candidates seeking to become the University’s 17th president. This public meeting will be livestreamed.

Yesterday, the Presidential Search Advisory Committee forwarded three candidates to the Board of Regents for its consideration. The committee reviewed 67 total applicants and measured their qualifications against the Board’s core leadership criteria, outlined in the  committee’s charge, as well as input generated through listening sessions held at all five campuses and online feedback.

“We are grateful to Regent Abdul Omari and the entire 23-member Presidential Search Advisory Committee for their tireless dedication to this search. They committed countless hours of their time and conducted a thorough, thoughtful process informed by faculty, staff, students and other members of the University community who have engaged in this process,” said Board Chair David McMillan. “The process has served the University well and has forwarded strong candidates for the Board’s consideration.”

Under the Minnesota Data Practices Act (Minn. Stat. 13.43, subd. 3), an applicant’s identity is private until that applicant has been selected for a final interview by the appointing authority – in this case, the Board of Regents. As a result, the Board will discuss individual candidates in ways that de-identify them (e.g., candidate 1, 2, 3).

Finalist(s) are expected to visit the University of Minnesota for public forums, followed by interviews with the Board.

“The Board takes its responsibility to select a president for this great institution very seriously,” McMillan said. “Our commitment to transparency remains strong. The University community helped launch this search, and in the coming weeks, the University community will help us bring the search to a close.”
