U of M to host Minnesota SPARKS event in Waseca


The University of Minnesota will bring its Minnesota SPARKS series to Waseca on Tuesday, Nov. 13 for a discussion on some of the region’s most critical issues. The event, hosted by Regent Darrin Rosha, will be held at the University’s Southern Research and Outreach Center.

Minnesota SPARKS will feature two University experts who will speak on understanding the local economy and rural retail revitalization in Waseca and throughout Southern Minnesota. The presentation will explore local events – like the closing of QuadGraphics and Hy-Vee – and the effects on the economy.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with presentations and Q&A discussions held from 6–7:30 p.m., followed by an open social hour. Minnesota SPARKS is free of charge, and all are welcome to attend. Registration is encouraged.

Presenting University of Minnesota researchers include:

Brigid Tuck 

Tuck is with Extension’s Center for Community Vitality. She conducts analysis and writes reports for the Economic Impact Analysis (EIA) program, which she helped launch in early 2009. Since then, the EIA program has issued more than 100 reports, covering numerous economic sectors in Minnesota - including tourism, education, manufacturing, retail, infrastructure, and local foods.

Hye-Young Kim

Kim is an associate professor in the Retail Merchandising Program in the College of Design at the University of Minnesota. She also serves as the Director of the Center for Retail Design and Innovation (CRDI) and the Undergraduate Program Director of Retail Merchandising. Kim’s research interests include consumer behavior, strategic retail management, rural retail revitalization, and ethnic minority entrepreneurship. Her research has appeared in a dozen national and international journals, and she has received multiple research awards from the Global Marketing Conference (GMC), the American Collegiate Retailing Association (ACRA) and International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA).

Minnesota SPARKS in Waseca is part of a larger series of Minnesota SPARKS events throughout the state.
