Doors open at 5:30 p.m., presentations and Q&A discussions are held from 6–7:15 p.m., and an open social hour will be held at 7:15 p.m. to close the evening. Minnesota Sparks is free of charge, and all are welcome to attend. To register, visit z.umn.edu/SparksinCrookston or contact the U of M Alumni Association at 612-624-2323.

Minnesota Sparks in Crookston features three University of Minnesota researchers:

  • Anthony Schroeder: Soaking up the Unknown in Minnesota's Waters
The presentation details the basic characteristics of freshwaters sponges, their preferred habitat, and how the University of Minnesota Crookston's comprehensive study will ultimately lead to a better understanding of Minnesota's lakes, rivers, and streams.

  • John Loegering: Engaging citizens to inspire commitment and dedication to wildlife resources
Learn about Professor Loegering's work with Extension's Master Gardener, Master Naturalist, Master Woodland Owner, citizen science, local Learning Circles, and Pesticide Safety Programs.

  • Neil Linscheid: Rewriting the Rural Narrative
The story of rural America since 1970 is rich and diverse, with positive trends occurring under the radar. Learn how these important positive changes have been occurring across the rural landscape that require us to rewrite the narrative of rural community change.

Minnesota Sparks in Crookston is part of a larger series of Minnesota Sparks events throughout the state.

Media note: Media are welcome to attend any or all of the event. Please RSVP to the University News Service, 612-624-5551unews@umn.edu. Interviews with presenting faculty are available.
