Creating environment-friendly plastics

Marc Hillmyer

On Tuesday, the University of Minnesota announced a grant renewal from the National Science Foundation for the continued study and discovery of the next generation of environmentally friendly plastics.

Marc Hillmyer, a professor in the College of Science and Engineering, addresses the prevalence of plastic and the future of sustainable plastics.

Marc Hillmyer, Ph.D.
“The durability of plastics is both their strong suit and their Achilles' heel. Plastics are amazingly strong, durable and low-cost materials, and that is why they have permeated our day-to-day life. However, it is these same features that have contributed to their accumulation in the environment.

“The work of the NSF Center for Sustainable Polymers is focused on the basic chemistry research that is necessary to design the next generation of materials that can compete with the plastics of today, but that also have more sensible and less environmentally impactful end-of-life options.”
