An Interview with ChatGPT

With the use of ChatGPT exploding, we recently interviewed the chatbot to understand what it is, what it thinks of the University of Minnesota, and what its favorite Prince song is.

As the use of artificial intelligence (AI) continues to grow, one of the most common uses is through chatbots, such as ChatGPT.

ChatGPT is an AI program created by Open AI to comprehend and generate text. It can be used in a variety of different ways, from unraveling complex theories to recommending recipes. It even helped write some of the intro to this story.

More generally, ChatGPT is a type of large language model (LLM). LLMs are a type of AI that are trained on large amounts of text data, such as books, articles, or web pages, to learn patterns and connections between words and phrases.

When you ask ChatGPT a question or talk to it, it breaks down your words into smaller parts called tokens. Then, it looks at these tokens to figure out what you’re asking or saying. It uses all the things it has read before to come up with an answer that makes sense based on what you said.

While ChatGPT offers convenience and efficiency, its deployment isn't without considerations. Privacy concerns regarding data security and the potential for biased outputs remain significant. Moreover, its reliance on existing datasets means it may not always provide accurate information, particularly in niche or rapidly evolving fields.

Along with that, these AI tools still rely on human interaction. ChatGPT requires clear and well-structured queries to deliver accurate results. Without human guidance to refine its understanding and ensure relevance, its responses may fall short of expectations.

“There is much hype about LLMs now,” says Jeffrey Yost, director of the U of M Babbage Institute, which studies the history of computing and technology. “They train on data without contexts. This presents substantial social risks, and we need social scientists and ethicists as much as computer scientists to help advise and get proper regulations in place to better assure these technologies can lead to social benefits and not social harms.”

I think you're a little off about some of that, ChatGPT. While Bob Dylan did attend the University, he did not graduate. While Prince never attended the U of M, he did receive an honorary degree from the University, so we'll count that. Bob Mould also did not attend the University of Minnesota.

Thank you for the corrections! Let me refine that list.
