U of M Technological Leadership Institute celebrates first graduating cohort of the Medical Device Innovation program

The University of Minnesota Technological Leadership Institute (TLI) announces the inaugural graduating cohort of the Medical Device Innovation (MDI) degree program. Sixteen graduates are now prepared to lead in a growing industry, critical to Minnesota’s economy.

“Our students, some of whom traveled across the world to be part of this degree program, now enter the workforce with the knowledge and skill necessary to be effective leaders and to drive innovation and business growth,” said Dr. Dan Mooradian, senior fellow and director of graduate studies for the Medical Device Innovation program. “We are extremely proud of the work they have done.”

The MDI curriculum provides students with a comprehensive understanding of medical device ideation, and development and commercialization processes. It also teaches the fundamentals of innovation, biodesign, leadership, globalization, intellectual property management and the regulatory approval process. The progressive curriculum concludes with a capstone project where students apply what they have learned within a broader organizational and industry framework.

“This degree meets a growing need for an interdisciplinary approach to graduate education in the field, as medical device companies and research institutions need qualified professionals to understand, anticipate, navigate and manage complex innovation challenges in the global medical-technology industry,” said Dr. Massoud Amin, director of the Technological Leadership Institute. “The exceptionally accomplished MDI faculty members have supported these capable students to be successful in this high-demand career field. “

The MDI graduates now join the more than 1,200 TLI alumni currently thriving in the workforce.

Our alumni have all of the capabilities, proven tools, know how, and habits to unleash innovative and entrepreneurial spirit amongst all of us, said Dr. Amin. “We have very high expectations for MDI alumni to develop and market new generations of life-enhancing services and technologies.”

The TLI graduates will be recognized on August 21, 2015 at a reception from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Courtyard Marriott, Downtown Minneapolis. To learn more about the TLI Medical Device innovation program please visit tli.umn.edu/graduate-programs/medical-device-innovation.
