In a recent announcement by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the University of Minnesota Twin Cities ranks sixth in the nation among public universities in the number of 2015-2016 Fulbright Program student awards.
Fourteen students from the U of M won Fulbright awards in 2015-2016: graduate students Colleen Bertsch (Musicology/Ethnomusicology, Romania), Nicholas Csargo (English Teaching Assistantship, Portugal), Joseph Getzoff (Geography, Israel), Emily Hoffmann (English Teaching Assistantship, Turkey), Rachel Schaff (Cultural Studies, Czech Republic), Hillary Waters (Geography, Zambia); and undergraduates Julia Brekke (Biomedical Engineering, Germany), Erik Katovich (Economics, Brazil), Tamara Marcus (Biochemistry, India), Alicia Nelson (English Teaching Assistantship, South Korea), Emily Parrent (Medieval Studies, Great Britain), Julia Horn Potach (English Teaching Assistant, Spain), Rebecca Rethwisch (English Teaching Assistant, Brazil) and McKenzie Stupica (English Teaching Assistantship, Germany).

Since its inception in 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 360,000 participants—chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential — with the opportunity to exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns. Over 1,900 U.S. students, artists and young professionals in more than 100 different fields of study are offered Fulbright Program grants to study, teach English and conduct research annually. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program operates in over 140 countries throughout the world.
In the U.S., the Institute of International Education administers and coordinates the activities relevant to the Fulbright U.S. Student Program on behalf of the Department of State, including conducting an annual competition for the scholarships.
