The University of Minnesota Technological Leadership Institute (TLI) is proud to announce the appointment of Professor Allison Hubel as TLI’s new director. College of Science and Engineering Dean Mos Kaveh appointed Hubel to a three-year term, making her the first woman to hold the position in the institute’s nearly 35-year history.
“Professor Hubel brings a wealth of outstanding accomplishments and leadership experience as an educator, scholar and entrepreneur to TLI at a pivotal time of change and emerging opportunities for the institute,” Kaveh said. “I am extremely grateful that she has accepted this important responsibility. We are very fortunate.”
Hubel will replace Professor Douglas Ernie, who is going on phased retirement from the University of Minnesota. Ernie has served as interim director of TLI since October 2018 and previously from January 2002 to March 2003.
Hubel, who holds both a master’s and doctoral degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, brings a wealth of academic, business and technology experience to her new role. In addition to her new responsibilities at TLI, she will continue her work as a professor in the University of Minnesota Department of Mechanical Engineering and as director of the University’s Biopreservation Core Resource (BioCoR), a national resource in biopreservation.
Hubel’s work is well-respected in the field. She is known for pioneering the use of low-temperature Raman Spectroscopy to understand mechanisms of damage and protection during freezing. Through her research, she developed methods of preserving cells using combinations of naturally-occurring molecules. That work led to the formation of a startup company, BlueCube Bio, the winner of the 2020 MN Cup, a statewide entrepreneurial competition. Hubel is a founder and chief science officer of BlueCube Bio. She has published numerous scientific articles in the field of preservation and is the author of “Preservation of Cells: A Practical Manual” published in 2018.
As director of TLI, Hubel will work closely with the directors of graduate studies, advisory board, and staff to serve students, alumni, and the greater community through executive education programs and continuing education opportunities that support TLI’s mission of developing local and global technological leaders and innovators.
“I am very honored to have the opportunity to work with the wonderful faculty and staff at the TLI,” Hubel said. “My intention is to create a shared vision of TLI moving forward. This vision includes strengthening the excellent programs that already exist, growing new programs to meet changes in both technology and the demands of the modern workplace, and supporting the University’s initiatives in technology commercialization.”
Hubel’s appointment began February 11, 2021, and runs through June 30, 2024.
