The U of M athletics department recognized the athletic achievements and the academic acumen of its 750 student-athletes in the annual Golden Goldys/Scholar Athlete banquet, April 13, at TCF Bank Stadium. The swank, ceremonial evening included musical performances and the awarding of prized Goldy statuettes.
The football and women's hockey teams were responsible for the Team of the Year and Coach of the Year awards. The football team went 8-5 last fall and played in the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl—the first January bowl game for the Gophers since 1962. Head coach Jerry Kill was named was named Big Ten Coach of the Year by both the league's head coaches and the media.
Head coach Brad Frost led the women's hockey team to its sixth national championship and third Frozen Four title in the last four years. The Gophers won the WCHA regular season title, held the No. 1 seed in the national tournament, and finished the season with a 34-3-4 record.
The Outstanding Student-Athlete Achievement Award, presented to one male and one female athlete who are accomplished in both academics and athletics, was presented to men's gymnast Ellis Mannon and softball player Kaitlyn Richardson.
Football's Luke McAvoy and swimming and diving's Christie Clarke were awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award in Leadership and Service, given to student-athletes who are accomplished in the areas of leadership and volunteerism.
