Once more, the U’s spirit squads have shined on the national stage—this time at the 2016 UCA and UDA College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship in Orlando.
The U’s dance team won its 16th overall national championship and its seventh (that’s right, seventh) straight national title in the Pom division. Minnesota is the only team in the history of the UDA to win the Pom division.
The dance team finished second in Jazz this year to the University of Tennessee in a rivalry that now spans more than a decade.
Also finishing second was Goldy Gopher in the mascot competition. Minnesota’s lovable mascot, a two-time national champion, finished behind Aubie from Auburn this year.
The Gophers’ all-girl cheer team and co-ed cheer team both qualified for the finals this year. The all-girl team placed eighth and the co-ed finished in 13th place.
