As much as Homecoming is a time for fanfare, revelry, and reacquainting with classmates and old friends, at the U of M it has also become a time for giving back to the community.
In 2014 the University of Minnesota Alumni Association (UMAA) originated a Day of Service at the beginning of Homecoming week, with volunteers signing up for activities in Minnesota and across the county. The event has grown dramatically in the three years since, and from 2015 to 2016 there was a 49 percent jump in participation.
This year’s Day of Service, which took place on Saturday, Oct. 14, has topped them all, with at least 630 participants signed up to serve their communities in 30 locations—17 in Minnesota, 12 elsewhere across the United States, and, for the first time ever, 1 international site (Tokyo).
The Day of Service is "an opportunity for alumni and friends to come together and serve in their own communities on behalf of the University of Minnesota," says Lisa Lewis, UMAA president and CEO.
