University of Minnesota Twin Cities College of Science and Engineering Professor Vladimir Sverak was recently elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS), one of the nation’s most prestigious honor societies. A University of Minnesota-led team has, for the first time, engineered an atomically thin material that can absorb nearly 100% of light at room temperature, a discovery that could improve a wide range of applications from optical communications to stealth technology.

The University of Minnesota Technological Leadership Institute (TLI), in collaboration with the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), Toro, Polaris and Design Ready Controls, recently announced the launch of the Minnesota Center for Electrification Opportunity (MN CEO). 

A University of Minnesota team has, for the first time, synthesized a thin film of a unique topological semimetal material that has the potential to generate more computing power and memory storage while using significantly less energy. The researchers were also able to closely study the material, leading to some important findings about the physics behind its unique properties.
