According to multiple media reports, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has told AT&T and Time Warner to sell DirecTV or Turner Broadcasting, the parent company of a variety of cable channels that includes CNN, before it can receive approval on its more than $85 billion merger.
Christopher Terry – an assistant professor of media ethics and law at the Hubbard School of Journalism & Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota – weighs in President Donald Trump’s history with CNN and what the DOJ demands could mean for the deal.
"The DOJ routinely assesses situations like the AT&T-Time Warner merger. Certainly, some people are concerned about the DOJ's request that CNN’s parent company be sold considering President Trump’s tumultuous relationship with the news network. While it may appear somewhat dubious, this is a routine assessment.”
Professor Terry holds a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Mass Communication with a Law Minor and a M.A. in Mass Communication from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
