The University of Minnesota and the Medical Alley Association will host the US Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) for “Healthcare Startup Day Minnesota” on Monday, Oct. 15 at McNamara Alumni Center.

The Twin Cities marks the sixth stop on HHS representatives’ two year tour to meet healthcare entrepreneurs in their local ecosystems and explore how to better support startups, while demystifying the agency’s vision, priorities and processes.

“From medical devices to diagnostics to pharmaceuticals, the University of Minnesota has a long track record of bringing life sciences technologies to the public through the launch of startup companies,” said Rick Huebsch, executive director of Technology Commercialization. “We are excited by this opportunity to better connect with the federal agencies under HHS and find new ways to support the success of startups bringing healthcare technologies to market in Minnesota through the University’s Venture Center.”

The event will feature representatives from key HHS agencies involved with healthcare and innovation, such as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the HHS IDEA Lab, and the Food and Drug Administration, who will collectively address topics relevant to local healthcare businesses, including pathways to FDA approval, reimbursement issues, proposed regulations, and how to access federal funding programs in Minnesota.

“Medical Alley is the most innovative health care cluster in the world,” said Shaye Mandle, president & CEO of the Medical Alley Association. “We are excited for HHS to see firsthand the great work being done here by companies across the health care spectrum and for the opportunity to build stronger relationship with these important agencies.”

In addition to hearing from the federal agencies, the event will feature speakers, panels, and business plan presentations that showcase Minnesota’s thriving healthcare innovation space. Presentations include remarks by Congressman Erik Paulsen and several Minnesota health care companies, as well as presentations on groundbreaking research and business development at the University of Minnesota. The event will close out with a “Walleye Tank,” a series of businesses pitches from local healthcare startups.
