Volleyball team stays perfect in the Big Ten

A Gopher volleyball player celebrates after a point.

Thirteen matches through the gauntlet that is the Big Ten volleyball season, the University of Minnesota remains undefeated. The latest challenge came on Halloween evening, when the No. 3 Golden Gophers overcame an early scare by No. 5 Wisconsin and prevailed 3-1 (16-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-19) for their 14th straight victory.

Once again, the Gophers and senior setter Samantha Seliger-Swenson spread out the offensive firepower, with Adanna Rollins (17) leading three players with 12 or more kills. Seliger-Swenson notched a season-high 56 assists, and Lauren Barnes and CC McGraw each had 16 digs.

Minnesota has not lost since dropping back-to-back games to Oregon and Stanford in early September, and in conference play has dropped only three sets all season. That’s truly remarkable when you consider that seven Big Ten teams are ranked in the top 15 in the country, and five (Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin, Penn State, and Nebraska) are ranked in the top 8.

A three-match homestand begins Nov. 3 against the Michigan State Spartans, and the Gophers wrap up Big Ten play Nov. 24 at Rutgers.

(Minnesota defeated Michigan State 3-2 on Nov. 3 to improve its record to 14-0 in the Big Ten.)
